A leaker, Mr. Tejiki Katadahito, has posted a list on Weibo of TSMC’s 3nm process “N3” with the start date of mass production by customer. The process is rumored to start with mass production of the Apple M2 Pro.
Mass production start timing for TSMC’s 3nm process by customer
In the list posted by Mr. Akira Katadahito, it is written for each customer when semiconductor mass production on TSMC’s 3 nm process “N3” will start.
Customer name | Start of mass production |
---|---|
Apple | Q4 2022 (October-December) |
Intel | Q4 2023 (October-December) |
Qualcomm | Q2 2024 (April-June) |
AMD | Q3 2024 (July-September) |
NVIDIA | Q3 2024 (July-September) |
MediaTek | Q3 2024 (July-September) |
A17 and M2 Pro/Max, big evolution is expected with miniaturization
Apple, TSMC’s biggest customer, seems to have priority in manufacturing semiconductors with the same process, and until October 2023, when mass production of Intel processors begins, A17 for the M2 Pro and M2 Max and the iPhone 15 Pro series is expected to be mass-produced.
It seems that the A15 Bionic for the iPhone 13 series and the M2 for the new MacBook Air are manufactured using TSMC’s 5nm process “N5P”. In addition, it is rumored that the A16 for the iPhone14 Pro series will be manufactured using the same process.
If the A17 for the iPhone15 Pro series is manufactured by TSMC’s 3nm process, it is expected that the operating frequency and power consumption will be greatly improved with miniaturization.
Exclusive use by Apple until the end of 2023
In Intel’s products, the production of the 14th generation Core processor (development codename: Meteor Lake) was scheduled to start at the end of 2022 at the same time as Apple, but DigiTimes reported that it was postponed to the end of 2023 due to the company’s circumstances. was
This postponement seems to be convenient for Apple, as Intel was believed to have secured most of the mass production frame for TSMC’s 3nm process.
