It turns out that Instagram is currently testing for full-screen size, i.e. 16:9 aspect ratio images.
The company’s CEO, Adam Mosseri, made the announcement during his weekly “Ask Me Anything” session on Instagram.
Currently only 5:4 images can be posted
The current Instagram app only supports images with a 5:4 aspect ratio and all images are cropped to fit this size.
Mosseri said that Instagram now supports vertical videos, so it’s time for images to do the same.
