MediaTek, which has a large share of the system-on-chip (SoC) market for smartphones, announced that it has successfully transferred data by installing the world’s first 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) connection function in smartphones. Did.

In the near future, communication using artificial satellites may become familiar.

The world’s first smartphone equipped with 5G NTN connection function

On August 16, 2022, MediaTek announced the world’s first smartphone with 5G NTN connectivity.

In addition, in collaboration with Rohde & Schwarz, we have successfully communicated data via an emulated low earth orbit satellite channel.

This means that we have succeeded in verifying the connection of 5G communication compatible smartphones to satellite networks, and the time may come when we can easily purchase smartphones compatible with satellite communication.

NTN technology that NTT pays attention to

Ordinary smartphones cannot communicate in places such as the sky, sea, or space, or even on the ground where there is no base station nearby.

NTN technology uses geostationary satellites, low-earth orbit satellites, and high-altitude platforms (HAPS) that use aircraft and airships to communicate, enabling coverage of areas not covered by conventional mobile phone networks.

Starlink, which was provided to Ukraine by Mr. Elon Musk, which has recently become a hot topic, also uses communication satellites to connect to the Internet.

Various research institutes and companies, including Japan’s NTT, are paying attention to NTN technology.
