The music recognition service “ Shazam ”, which was acquired by Apple in 2018, actually started in August 2002, and this week marks its 20th anniversary. To mark the milestone, Apple Music has released a playlist of the most Shazamed songs of the last 20 years.
Tracks recognized over 70 billion times
When Shazam was born in 2002, it was pretty analog. Users dialed 2580, held their phones up to speakers, and were eventually sent texts identifying the song and artist. Twenty years later, with over 70 billion requests, it’s hard to imagine life without this convenient digital tool. With over a billion song recognitions each month and links to concert tickets and lyrics, this app has fundamentally changed the way we discover and share music.
To celebrate Shazam’s 20th anniversary, we’ve released a special playlist featuring the most Shazamed songs each year. An out-of-order playlist makes for a fun trip down memory lane.
Incidentally, the most Shazamed song of all time is Tones And I’s “Dance Monkey,” which has been requested 41 million times to date.
